Exhibition Statement
JD and Megan Jorgenson are a husband and wife duo based in Kimball MN, where they run a community ceramics studio and making space called Maine Prairie Studio. This exhibition features their individual artwork which has been fired collaboratively in their gas and wood burning kilns.
The exhibition title is partly a tongue-in-cheek acknowledgement of one of the greatest challenges in producing creative work: ourselves. Despite being in our own way most of the time, we have managed to pull this exhibition together.
Additionally, the title is a nod to the song “In Spite of Ourselves“, a love song and duet performed by John Prine and Iris Dement. This exhibition is also a duet and a love song - to clay, process and to each other.
JD’s work in the show is wood fired, a process he has investigated throughout his time working in clay. The pieces are unglazed other than through the firing process. The aesthetic is created through ash landing on the work during the firing as well as decisions made during the loading process. He chose to use slips instead of glazes on the work, lending to a more understated and quiet presence.
Megan’s work reflects an ongoing interest in the intersection between two dimensional imagery and three dimensional form. The pieces contain both industrial and decorative patterns, merged with rural landscapes. The pieces demonstrate a variety of forming and surface techniques, including both wheel throwing and handbuilding, and use stencils, stamping, inlay and sgraffito.
