Spring pottery classes run for ten weeks from March 18 - May 24, 2024. Class will meet once a week for ten weeks. Classes will be held at our new location in downtown Kimball, 70 Main Street S.

Your class registration will include: class instruction, 25 pounds of clay, open studio access, access to our common tools, pottery wheels, ware racks, slips, glazes, bisque and glaze firing with up to two 12 x 24 kiln shelves of work included for 10 weeks. Additional firing costs may be incurred depending on the amount of work made. Firing costs will be calculated based on the number of 12 x 24 shelves used by each individual in our cone 10 reduction kiln. The cost per shelf is $25. 

General Open Studio hours, available for all registered students: 

These open studio hours are included in the cost of the class. Open studio hours start on March 22.

  • Mondays - Thursdays:  4 - 9 pm
  • Fridays and Saturdays: 10 am - 5 pm

Extended open studio passes to access additional hours are available at an additional cost of $100/10 week classes for enrolled students. Those hours are:

  • Monday - Thursday, 8 am - 9 pm
  • Friday and Saturday 8 am - midnight

Intermediate Wheel

6pm - 9pm

Expand your throwing skills! This class  is intended for students who are comfortable centering and pulling clay on the wheel. The class will focus on improving fundamental throwing skills, trimming and glazing skills and exploring a variety of pottery forms including plates, lidded forms, vases and bottles.

Beginning Wheel

6pm - 9pm

Cost: $350

Instructor: JD

Learn how to use the pottery wheel in this ten week class geared for complete beginners or students with an introductory exposure to the wheel. During this class, students will learn to create a variety of forms on the wheel including cylinders, cups, mugs, bowls and plates. Students will also explore applying slip and glaze to the work.

Wednesdays

Special Topics: Exploring Surface Design for Wood Firing 

March 20 - May 22

6pm - 9pm

Instructor: JD and Megan

Cost: $500 - includes wood kiln firing fee

Firing dates (approximate) : May 31 - June 3

This course will explore a variety of techniques for adding imagery and depth to the ceramic surface and especially for wood firings . Topics will include slip inlay, iron painting, sgraffito, brushed slip, drawing and others. Students are welcome to use handbuilding and wheel throwing techniques.

This is a great opportunity to learn about surfaces and wood firing through creating work and participating in the wood firings at Maine Prairie Studio. Students will have the opportunity to participate in one wood firing at the end of the 10 week session. Class time will be focused on learning about making forms for the wood kilns, slips and glazes for the wood kilns and the wood firing process. Students should have some previous experiences with clay because introductory processes will not be taught during class.

Introduction to Pottery: Handbuilding and Wheel

6pm - 9pm

Cost: $350

Explore both wheel throwing and handbuilding techniques. This class is designed for beginning students who are interested in a variety of ways to create handmade pottery. It would also be suitable for students with wheel throwing experience who wish to add handbuilding to their repertoire.
